A college student was killed and two others were injured at a bull chasing event on Friday in a village in Vellore district. Police said the event was held at Moojurpet village in Vellore taluk as a part of Thai Kiruthigai festival.
Unlike the controversial jallikattu event where the bulls are tamed by humans, bull chasing is a more like a race but sometimes leads to fatalities when humans crisscross the bulls' path or when the bulls enter viewers' arena.
About 50 bulls from neighbouring villages took part in the annual event, with hundreds of enthusiastic villagers chasing them. In the melee a bull entered the viewers' arena and hit Vinoth Kumar, 21, a second-year commerce student of a private college. He sustained severe injuries in his neck and abdomen and died on the spot. The bull also hit two others Gunaseelan, 55, and Mani, 50 who sustained severe injuries. They were admitted to Vellore government medical college and hospital.
